Technofiction

I came across a very interesting video found on YouTube.  It is author Roger Bourke White Jr.'s new genre of science fiction called Technofiction.  He describes it in his video as a science fact kind of writing where the science is a major part of the story.  The science has to be researched and real.  He lists some examples in his video which I find very interesting because I feel this type of storytelling is more entertaining and believable to the reader.  It peaks ones curiosity about science.

Jules Verne

I have always had a fascination with science fiction and Jules Verne is the person who pioneered the genre.  He talked about things such as air travel and underwater sea travel before it was even invented.  He has a facebook page which is full of information about his life and adventures. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Jules-Verne/12761150736097
Even though he is not with us anymore he does have quite an interesting facebook page.  The picture on the front is one from Journey to the Center of the Earth and his page is full of facts about his life and his works.  With 189 thousand likes he is definitely still a popular author today.  That is the true love of Science Fiction, you are only limited by your imagination and you can take it as far as you want it to go.

Colorado Theater Shooting

I wanted to share my thoughts on the Colorado theater shooting.  The one thing that I keep playing over in my head is that this is a different world we live in compared to when I was a kid back in the '80's.  Sure there was evil in the world but we seemed to be somehow protected from it and it never really affected us.  The most terrorism we would see would be guys with potato sacks over their heads demanding something out of an airplane.
I would always go to the Tradewinds theater when I was a kid all of the time.  I was always out and about riding my bike, playing in the park, or just hanging out with my friends until the sun came down.  There was never any threat of being abducted or anything, we just had fun.  Now I could not even imagine letting my kids go out and play unless my eye was on them.
I just don't understand the why's.  Why would someone just randomly start killing people enjoying a movie?  Nothing is sacred anymore and it makes me want to get a gun to protect my family but I can't do that in Illinois since it is the only state that does not allow me to carry a concealed weapon.  Life can be very hard but that does not give a person the right to just kill innocent people enjoying a movie.
People in the news are saying that this is a rare and isolated incident but it is not.  These kind of shootings are happening at schools, universities, military institutions, resorts and now movie theaters.  It makes me wonder what the next place will be for this kind of shooting, thus the reason for wanting to carry a gun.  Will it be the grocery store, bowling ally, shopping mall, water slide park, race track?  Hearing the story of the 6 year old girl who died breaks my heart and it hits too close to home and it makes me want to protect my family.
